Home boarding or kennels in Hull?

Home boarding and boarding kennels both mean your dog stays overnight away from your own house, but the setting is very different. Of Hull's 13 listed businesses, five board dogs in the boarder's own home and five run purpose-built kennels; the rest offer day care only or arrange boarding through others.

Home boarding

Five businesses board dogs in their own home: Wright Dog Walker Hedon in Hedon, Sue's Dog Boarding - Hull and Cockapoo Hotel in Sutton, Tailz 'n' Trailz in Cottingham, and PetStay - Hull, East Riding & Yorkshire, whose office sits in Hessle but which places dogs with a network of carers across the city. Your dog has a household's routine, its sofa and its garden, usually alongside only that household's own dogs, and often a much smaller number of dogs than a kennels would take at once. Home boarding is a licensed activity of its own, and the licence is issued to a person at an address; we list home boarders here by area and town only, and the address is theirs to give you once you book.

Boarding kennels

Five businesses run kennels rather than home boarding: Windy Hill Cats & Dogs Hotel and Battery Cottage Boarding Kennels, both near Hedon, Prestige Boarding Kennels in Sutton, and Bilton Kennels & Cattery, also in Sutton; Burstwick Doggy Day Care, near Hedon, also holds a kennels licence type alongside its day care. A kennels gives your dog an individual space with a bed and a run, set feeding and exercise times, and staff on site, and generally has more room left in the school holidays than a home boarder taking one dog at a time.

A third pattern: arranging, not boarding directly

Positively Responsible Animal Services, based in Brough, arranges home boarding through a named coordinator as well as running its own day care, rather than boarding dogs in its own house. If you are considering this route, ask exactly whose home your dog would stay in and how that person is chosen.

Which suits your dog

A nervous dog, an older dog, or one that has never spent a night away from people, often does better in a home than a kennel run. A dog that would rather have its own space, or one from a household already boarding two or three dogs together, can suit a kennels well. The licence either way

Home boarding and boarding kennels are both licensed activities, but the licence sits with different people: a home boarder's licence is issued to a person at their address, while a kennels licence is issued for the premises itself.
