Whether your dog is going to a home boarder, a day-care site or one of York's boarding kennels, a first stay usually starts with some kind of trial before the real booking, so both sides can see how the dog settles. Ask whether one is offered even where a business's own material does not set it out.
Before you book: ask for a trial
Stud Farm Country Club for Dogs, in Wigginton, requires every new dog to complete a trial session before regular day-care bookings are accepted, and Peach's Pals, in Tadcaster, charges £18 for a paid assessment session of up to five hours before ongoing day care begins. Both are useful examples of what a first visit can involve even at a business that does not describe a trial process publicly.
What to pack
Take your dog's usual food for the length of the stay, any medication with clear written instructions, a bed or blanket that smells of home, and a lead and collar with an up-to-date tag. Check the exact opening hours for whichever business you choose: Peach's Pals opens weekdays only, 7:30am to 6pm, while Dunholme Grange Boarding Kennels & Cattery, near Boroughbridge, opens 362 days a year but limits visiting and collection to two daily windows, 8am to 11am and 4pm to 5:30pm.
Handover on the day
Give the person taking your dog a clear account of feeding times, any health issues, and how your dog behaves around other dogs, so a boarder or kennels can adjust its plan for your dog specifically. Good Boy Pet Services, in Haxby, limits its home boarding to one dog at a time, or more only if they are from your own household, which is worth confirming at handover if you are booking more than one dog.
Collection, and what can add to the price
Ask what happens if you are early or late collecting, and whether a bank holiday or an out-of-area collection adds to the price. Waggy Tails / Heather's Lavender Dog Hotel, a home boarder in the Haxby & Wigginton area, states a two-day minimum stay with bank holidays charged extra; Paws in the Countryside, near Tadcaster, publishes a 50-minute dog walk at £13 alongside its boarding, with weekend walks available by arrangement for a surcharge. Neither charge is unusual for this kind of business, but asking before the stay avoids a surprise on the day you collect your dog.
Meeting a home boarder first
Six of the 14 businesses listed for York are individually licensed home boarders, and their address is only given once you book, not published on this site. Because of that, the first proper look you get at where your dog will actually stay is usually the meet-and-greet itself: use that visit to see the garden, check how many other dogs might be there during your dates, and ask what a typical day in the house looks like.
