Dog boarding and day care in Sunderland, area by area

Sunderland's twelve listed dog boarders and day cares are spread unevenly across the town's seven defined areas, and are licensed across two different councils: Sunderland City Council for the five areas nearer the coast and Washington and Houghton-le-Spring further inland, and Durham County Council for Seaham. This guide lists exactly what is published in each, and says plainly where coverage is thin.

Sunderland city centre

This area, along with Fulwell & Roker, Southwick & Castletown, Silksworth & Ryhope, Washington and Houghton-le-Spring, is covered by Sunderland City Council; see our council licences guide for why no licence fact can be shown for any business in these six areas.

Two businesses are listed here: Ferry Farm Boarding Kennels & Cattery, a kennels and cattery near South Hylton offering dog boarding, cat boarding and day care from two heated kennel blocks; and Barking Mad – Sunderland and Durham, a home-boarding franchise that covers the whole area rather than one part of it.

Fulwell & Roker: thin

Only one business is listed here, West Hall Boarding Kennels on Cleadon Lane, a long-standing kennels and cattery that also offers day boarding on weekdays. This is the thinnest of Sunderland's seven areas; a follow-up pass would be needed to find more Fulwell or Roker operators with a confirmed phone number.

Southwick & Castletown

Two businesses are listed here: Doggy Digzzz and Cat Club, a dog and cat boarding business with grooming, trading since 2024; and Take The Lead Doggy Day Care, a day-care-only service run by the community organisation Springboard NE.

Silksworth & Ryhope

Two businesses are listed here, both home boarders: Alpha Omega – Dog Walking Sunderland, which publishes a price from £34 a day, and Dogs Are Us, which also offers dog walking alongside boarding and day care.

Washington

Two businesses are listed here: MyPetStop, a large multi-service pet centre offering boarding, a day and night crèche, grooming, training and hydrotherapy; and the Washington site of Mighty Mutt House, which runs day care, training, grooming and hydrotherapy but not overnight stays.

Houghton-le-Spring: thin

Only one business is listed here, Maid in the North East, a home boarder trading since 2016 that also offers pet visits, microchipping and a pet taxi service alongside boarding and day care. This is a thin area in this round of research; a follow-up pass would be needed to find more Houghton-le-Spring operators with a confirmed phone number.

Seaham

Two businesses are listed here: Adrian's Dog Buddy, a home boarder offering up to four walks a day at £25 a night, and the Seaham site of Mighty Mutt House, which runs day care, training, grooming and hydrotherapy but not overnight stays.
