How Sheffield's councils license dog boarders
All dog day care, home boarding and boarding kennels businesses in England need a council licence, and the council carrying out the inspection also gives every licensed premises a star rating from one to five. Sheffield's 12 listed businesses sit under two different councils, and the two registers behind them are genuinely different in what they show — this guide sets out exactly what was checked against each one, and what wasn't.
Sheffield City Council: a live register, but a thin one
Nine of the 12 businesses sit under Sheffield City Council, whose own public licensing database lists a licence number, the licence holder's name, and the dates it was issued and expires. It does not show a street address, which activity the licence covers, or a star rating. Of these nine, five — dogs inc., Paws to Play, The Social Dog Daycare, Life On Paws Dog Sitting and Mosborough Kennels & Cattery — were matched to a specific register entry by licence number. Because the council's register carries no star field at all, this site does not show a council licence rating for any Sheffield City Council business, even where a business quotes its own five-star figure elsewhere; that figure is the business's own claim, not something read from the register.
Four businesses with no confirmed register match
Dotties Doggy Daycare, Meadowbank Farm Dog Day and Boarding, Lea Farm Kennels and Hotel for Pets could not be matched to an entry on Sheffield City Council's register under their trading name in this research, and are not described as licensed by this site as a result; ask to see a current certificate when you call any of them.
Dronfield: North East Derbyshire District Council
Border View Farm Kennels, Jo's Wonder Paws and Tails 'n' Trails Dronfield are licensed, if at all, by North East Derbyshire District Council rather than Sheffield City Council. This council's own register pages could not be reached in this research, and no third-party mirror of it was found either. Jo's Wonder Paws and Tails 'n' Trails Dronfield both quote a licence number and a five-star rating on their own websites; those figures are shown here as the business's own statement, not confirmed against the council's register. Border View Farm Kennels makes no licence claim of its own that was found in this research.
What to do with this
Ask any of Sheffield's 12 businesses to show you its current licence certificate. For the five Sheffield-council businesses matched above, this site has checked the licence number against the council's own register; for the other seven, it has not been able to, for the reasons set out here, and no star rating is shown for any of the 12 for that same reason.
