Of the eight dog day-care, boarding-kennels and home-boarding businesses listed for Mansfield and Ashfield, five hold a licence for home boarding, two run boarding kennels, and one, Mansfield Canine Centre, is licensed for day care only with no overnight licence recorded against it.
What a boarding kennels gives you
A boarding kennels means your dog has its own space on a site built for it, with set feeding and exercise times, rather than joining someone's household. Mansfield and Ashfield's two kennels licences are held by Coxmoor House Kennels & Cattery, near Kirkby-in-Ashfield, which has CCTV, electric gates and three two-acre exercise fields and also boards cats; and Kingstand Lodge Kennels & Cattery, near Budby in the Ollerton and Edwinstowe area, a family-run site with 30 individual heated kennels, covered exercise runs and a cattery and grooming service alongside boarding.
What a home boarder gives you
A home boarder means your dog lives in somebody's house instead, usually alongside far fewer other dogs at a time; the address is given once you book, not published here. Mansfield and Ashfield's five home boarders are Dalton K9 Academy and Prodigy K9, both run by dog trainers in the Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield area; We Love Pets Mansfield, the local franchise in the same area, which also publishes prices for home boarding, dog walking and pet visits; K9 Playtime, in Rainworth and Blidworth, working from a 1.5-acre field with an indoor play area; and Country Woofs, in the Ollerton and Edwinstowe area, which describes itself as small-group, home-from-home boarding.
Day care only, with no overnight licence
Mansfield Canine Centre, on Hermitage Lane in Mansfield, is licensed for day care only, and runs an online booking system alongside its main site. It is the only business listed here with no boarding option at all, overnight or home, so if your dog needs to stay away for more than a day, look to one of the other seven.
Which suits your dog
A kennels tends to suit a dog that is happy with its own space and a set routine; a home boarder tends to suit a dog that finds a group of strange dogs stressful, or one that is used to living in a house rather than a run. Neither type is licensed to a higher standard than the other by default: home boarding and boarding kennels sit under the same 2018 regulations in England, just as different categories, so asking to see the certificate is the same question either way.
