Home boarding or boarding kennels in Manchester?

Home boarding and boarding kennels are both overnight care away from your own house, but the setting is very different, and Manchester's 23 listed businesses lean heavily towards one of them. Thirteen board dogs in the boarder's own home; only two, Pawprints Kennels and K9 Retreat, are licensed as boarding kennels in the strict sense.

Home boarding

A home boarder takes your dog into their own house: their sofa, their garden, their routine, usually only one household's dogs at a time. Manchester's thirteen home boarders are spread across every area with listings: The Classy Collar and The Doodle House in Wythenshawe; Happi Walks in Didsbury & Chorlton; Bark Park Central, Moss Cottage Kennels and Cattery, Roe Clare Cattery & Kennels and The Doggy House in Sale & Altrincham; Alfie's Pet Services, Barks & Bubbles Stockport, Qhuinns Walks and SK Luxury Dog Boarding in Stockport; and Digs for Dogs and Pad, Foot and Paws in Prestwich & Bury. This directory shows a home boarder by area and town only, never a street, because a home boarder's premises is their own address.

Boarding kennels

A boarding kennel is purpose-built accommodation, with an individual kennel and run rather than a family's own house, and set feeding and exercise times run by staff on site. Pawprints Kennels and K9 Retreat, both in Prestwich & Bury, are the only two licensed this way in Manchester; K9 Retreat also holds a day care licence. Two more businesses, Moss Cottage Kennels and Cattery and Roe Clare Cattery & Kennels, describe themselves as kennels on their own sites, but Trafford Council actually licenses both under home boarding and day care rather than boarding kennels — worth asking about directly if the distinction matters to your booking.

What actually differs

• Number of dogs on site at once: usually far fewer at a home boarder than a kennel.
• Routine: a home boarder's own household routine, versus a kennel's set feeding and exercise times.
• Cats and other pets on site: several of the businesses here also board cats or small pets; ask if that matters to your dog.
• Availability: a kennel with more than one run can sometimes take a late booking a single-household home boarder can't.

Two of Manchester's listed businesses, Moss Cottage Kennels and Cattery and Roe Clare Cattery & Kennels, both in Sale & Altrincham, board cats as well as dogs; ask whether that changes how your dog is looked after if you have more than one kind of pet booking in together. Neither is licensed as a boarding kennels in the strict sense, despite the name each has chosen for itself, so it's worth asking directly how its dog boarding actually runs day to day rather than assuming it matches a purpose-built kennels elsewhere.
