Day care or overnight boarding in Leeds?

Twenty-five dog boarders, day cares and kennels are listed for Leeds. Sixteen of them offer day care, where a dog goes in for the day and comes home in the evening, and seven run boarding kennels for overnight stays, while thirteen more board dogs overnight in their own home as a home boarder. Several businesses offer more than one of these, so the same address can be the right answer to both questions.

When day care fits

Day care suits a dog that would otherwise be on its own through a working day: it goes in after breakfast and comes back at teatime, either into a supervised group or into someone's home. Five of the sixteen day-care businesses listed here run day care only, with no overnight boarding at all: The K9 Hub in Leeds city centre, Top Dog Leeds in Pudsey, Woofer's Courtyard near Wetherby, Mrs B's Dogs in Headingley, and Kirkby Dog Care in Garforth, which advertises day care and pet visits although its council licence is recorded under home boarding, so ask which it actually offers.

When overnight boarding fits

Overnight boarding, whether in a kennel or a home boarder's house, is for a night away rather than a day: one night for a wedding, a week for a holiday, or longer. Seven of the businesses listed here run boarding kennels, purpose-built accommodation with an individual run and set feeding times, mostly clustered around Garforth. Thirteen more are home boarders, taking dogs into their own house instead, spread more widely across Horsforth and Garforth in particular. See our home boarding or kennels guide for how those two compare.

Businesses that do both

Several boarders and kennels combine day care with overnight stays under one roof, which can suit a dog that's already settled somewhere and simply needs an occasional extra day. Sandgate Boarding and Day Care and Tucana Home from Home, both boarding kennels in Garforth, take day-care bookings alongside overnight ones; among home boarders, Yorkshire Canine Care, Kelly's Paw Pals, Pedigree Pet Care Leeds and several others in Horsforth do the same.

What each option tends to cost

Day care here is generally priced by the half or full day: Cookridge Canine Care charges £15 for a half day and £20 for a full day, while Woofer's Courtyard charges £18 for a half day and £28 for a full day. Overnight boarding is usually priced per day or per night instead: New Forest Pet Care charges £30 a night, and Yorkshire Canine Care charges £35 a day. These are a handful of published examples, not a full price list; see our prices guide for the rest.

Deciding between them

  • Is your dog used to being left alone for a full day, or would it cope better going somewhere?
  • Would your dog settle better in a family home, or does it prefer its own space?
  • Do your dates need one night, several, or a regular weekly day?

Whichever you choose, published prices for both are in our Leeds prices guide.
