Home boarding or kennels in Eastbourne?
Of the eight dog boarding, day-care and home-boarding businesses listed for Eastbourne, five are home boarders, licensed to keep dogs in their own house: The Sussex Dog Retreat and We Love Pets Eastbourne & Polegate in the Eastbourne centre area, Dingo's Rest and Salty Seadogs Seaford in Seaford, and Active Animal Pet Care in Hailsham. Two run boarding kennels instead: Nightingale Boarding Kennels in Polegate and Linden Lodge Kennels & Cattery near Hailsham. The remaining business, Eastbourne Doggy Daycare, runs day care only from premises in the Pevensey area, neither a home nor a kennels block.
What a boarding kennels gives you
A boarding kennels means your dog has its own space on a site built for it, with set feeding and exercise times and more dogs on site at once than a home boarder would take. Nightingale Boarding Kennels has ten kennels with outdoor runs, paddocks, an agility area and a stream, and prices from £25 a night for a dog sharing a kennel. Linden Lodge Kennels & Cattery, run by John and Lynne since 2015, has boarded dogs and cats at its Hempstead Lane premises for more than 45 years, and offers a cattery alongside its dog kennels plus a grooming discount when booked with a stay.
What a home boarder gives you
A home boarder means your dog lives in somebody's house instead, usually alongside only one household's own dogs at a time; the address is given once you book, not published here. The Sussex Dog Retreat limits itself to four dogs at a time and says it has experience with senior dogs and dogs with dementia or other health issues. Dingo's Rest, based in Seaford, also offers dog walking and pet and house sitting, and covers a wide area including Brighton, Hastings and Lewes as well as Eastbourne. Salty Seadogs Seaford leads with dog walking and a pet-feeding visit alongside its home boarding. We Love Pets Eastbourne & Polegate is a franchise branch run by Sophie Dell under a "no pack walking" policy, never taking more than four dogs out together. Active Animal Pet Care, in Hailsham, currently says on its own site that it is not accepting any new dogs for day care or boarding as it is full.
The day-care-only listing
Eastbourne Doggy Daycare, despite its name, sits in the Pevensey area near Westham and Stone Cross rather than Eastbourne itself. It offers neither home boarding nor kennels, running day care by appointment only with a four-hour taster session before a first booking.
Which suits your dog
A kennels tends to suit a dog that is happy with its own space and a set routine; a home boarder tends to suit a dog that finds a kennels environment stressful, or one that is used to living in a house rather than a run. Neither type is licensed to a higher standard than the other by default: home boarding and boarding kennels are licensed under the same regulations, so asking to see the certificate is the same question either way.
