How Cardiff licenses dog boarders
Cardiff is in Wales, and Wales did not adopt the licensing regime used in England. Boarding kennels, home boarding and day care are all licensed under the older Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963, renewed every year rather than over several years as England's newer rules allow.
Who licenses Cardiff
Cardiff Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council license jointly, through Shared Regulatory Services, a shared licensing team covering both council areas and Bridgend. Neither council publishes its own separate online register, and the Wales national register at animallicensing.gov.wales, which would normally confirm a licence, could not be read for this research; its search tool returned an error rather than results on every attempt. This means no business listed for Cardiff carries a confirmed register match: every licence claim shown here is either absent or, where a business quotes its own licence number, stated by the business itself rather than checked against the register.
No star ratings in Wales
England's councils score a licensed premises from 1 to 5 stars at inspection; Wales has no equivalent scheme. A Cardiff business cannot honestly be described as council-rated to a number of stars, whatever it may say on its own site, because no such rating exists here to hold. If you see a star claim on a Cardiff business's own page, it is either describing a different, non-council rating, such as a customer review site, or is simply inaccurate for a Welsh licence.
What this means for you
Because the register could not be checked, asking to see a business's current 1963 Act licence certificate directly matters more here than in a town with a working register.
