Home boarding or kennels in Bradford?
Four of Bradford's ten listed dog boarders are home boarders, and six run boarding kennels or a cattery on a dedicated premises. The two are genuinely different ways of looking after a dog while you are away, not just a difference in price, so it is worth understanding what each involves before you choose.
Home boarding
A home boarder takes your dog into their own house: their sofa, their garden, their daily routine, usually alongside only that household's own dogs rather than a large group. It is a licensed activity in its own right in England, so the boarder holds a Bradford MBC home boarding licence just as a kennels does. Bradford's four listed home boarders are Cullingworth Pooches Playground and A Home from Home for Dogs, both in the Queensbury, Clayton Heights & Thornton area, and Petstay Leeds and Ilkley Branch and Tatty's Dog Walking and Pet Care, both in the Ilkley & Menston area. Boarding kennels and catteries
A boarding kennels is purpose-built accommodation away from anyone's living room: an individual kennel with a bed and a run, set feeding and exercise times, and staff working set hours on site. It usually takes more dogs at once than a home boarder, which can mean more room left in a busy school-holiday week. Bradford's six premises businesses are Padagan Boarding Kennels & Cattery in the Bradford city centre & inner Bradford area, The Springs Boarding Kennels & Cattery in the Bingley area, Morton Villa Pet Hotel in the Queensbury, Clayton Heights & Thornton area, and The Rhyddings Kennels, Wharfedale Kennels and Cattery and Sunnymead Ltd, all in the Ilkley & Menston area. Five of these six also take cats alongside dogs; only The Rhyddings Kennels does not.
What to weigh up
- How many other dogs will be there at the same time as yours, in either setting.
- Whether your dog is more settled in a quiet family house or copes fine in a busier kennels environment.
- Whether you need day care as well as overnight stays: three of the six kennels businesses here also offer day care, while none of the four home boarders currently list it separately.
- Whether you need a cattery slot for a cat at the same time, which narrows the kennels options to five of the six.
How booking usually works
A home boarder will normally want a phone call or a message first, then arrange a meet-and-greet at their home before confirming a longer stay; the exact address is shared with you once that is agreed, never published here. A boarding kennels is more often booked by phone or email straight away, sometimes with a look round on request, since there is no household privacy to protect in the same way. Either way, ask what happens if your dog does not settle on a first visit, since that is worth knowing before you commit to a longer booking.
